Job summary
A local organisation is looking for an outstanding and dynamic individual with high level of competence, integrity, moral and institutional commitment willing to take up the challenge of being a Legal Aid and Advocacy Officer. The prospective legal aid and advocacy officer is required to have an impeccable academic qualification in Law from a recognised university and should have at least 5 years practicing experience as a lawyer in the civil and criminal courts.

Main duties & responsibilities

  • Provides client-friendly, professional and high quality legal assistance services;
  • Manages the client database and produces M& E reports, annual reports, concept notes and stakeholders’ reports;
  • Develops and maintains good working relations with key government institutions, local authorities, policy makers, and relevant organisations and stakeholders who can support the work of the organisation at local and national levels.
  • Develops dissemination strategies that are designed to target specific key stakeholders;
  • Develops and implements advocacy, policy and campaign activities within the organisation with the support of relevant programme teams to help achieve the strategic goals of the organisation;
  • Designs project proposals to fundraise for the entire organisation

Academic qualification

  • A degree in law from a recognised university is required for this job.

Critical or technical competencies required

  • Must have experience drawing up legal briefs, a valid practicing certificate or at least be eligible to hold a practicing certificate;
  • Must be able to read, analyse and interpret legal and policy documentation;
  • Must have demonstrated knowledge and practice of advocacy techniques and strategies;
  • Must have experience or exposure in conducting mobile legal aid clinics;
  • Must be able to manage a heavy workload, frequent travel, and irregular work hours;
  • Must have demonstrable negotiation skills and ability to network the organisation to various civil society partners and donors.
  • Experience in monitoring and evaluation will be an added advantage.
