This is an independent consulting engagement for services on an intermittent basis estimated to be about 75 days per year. Finalization of the consultant agreement is subject to USAID approval. The consultant has be legally resident in the following countries: Chad, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, Zambia, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, South Africa, Eswatini, and Lesotho.

Scope:
- Support the implementation of the RIH’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy, including support for the entire implementation team on integration of environmental sustainability, biodiversity, efficient natural resource use and climate resiliency into all RIH interventions in support of innovators and other activities
- Develop environmental compliance documents associated with the issuance of innovation grants including but not limited to Initial Environmental Examination (IEE) and Environmental Mitigation and Monitoring Plan (EMMP) and Environmental Mitigation and Monitoring Report (EMMR) per USAID’s regulation 216.
- Provide on-demand technical assistance to innovators in assessing benefits and impacts of nexus technologies on environment, biodiversity, natural resources and climate resiliency, complying with local environmental requirements and ensuring adherence to project-level environmental compliance requirements.
- Advise screening and selection of innovators as potential WE4F Innovators based on considerations of environmental sustainability
Engage and share learnings and relevant resources and develop internal guidance for the implementing team on environmental sustainability-related issues - Review and support implementation of innovator acceleration work plans, especially environmental sustainability topic-centric market segment research
- Support the collection of performance indicator data and provide inputs for the preparation of communication pieces and progress reporting
- Create and update knowledge management products on innovators’ experiences with environmental sustainability topics
Requirements:
- A graduate degree in environmental science, natural resources, agriculture or a related field
- 5 years’ experience in the S/C Africa leading environmental, biodiversity and performance risk and impact assessments, with a focus on nexus technologies
- Experience working with USAID Environmental Compliance Procedures, especially USAID’s Reg 216 and related documents
- Familiarity with IFC performance standards
- Familiarity with the environmental regulations and requirements of the other WE4F Donor Partners namely the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of the Netherlands and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (sida).
- Fluency in English (reading, writing and presentation skills), French and Portuguese are a plus
- Srong oral and written communications skills and ability to communicate with WE4F grantees and RIH team members
- Proven ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment
